Elmira, N.Y., August 26--Responsible New York, a political
reform organization founded by Rochester businessman and former gubernatorial
candidate Tom Golisano, has endorsed the re-election of State Senator George
Winner (R-C-I, Elmira) in the 53rd Senate District.
"I welcome this recognition from Responsible
New York that we share common goals for reforming New York government,
particularly when it comes to taking the actions necessary for rebuilding
and revitalizing the upstate economy," Winner said. "I’m certainly
enthusiastic about any and every effort to keep the spotlight on the fundamental
challenges facing our upstate region and on the overriding need for a statewide
commitment to help spark a turnaround in the fortunes of upstate communities."
In a statement released yesterday, which included the announcement of Winner’s
endorsement, Responsible New York co-chair Laureen Oliver said, "Responsible
New York will support people who are willing to act for reform and not just
talk about it. Anyone who supports reform will have our endorsement and
our support."
Responsible New York co-chair Steve Pigeon added, "Responsible New
York is committed to a reform agenda and we will support candidates in any
party and any part of the state that put the People first."
Winner’s 53rd District encompasses all of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and
Yates counties, and a portion of Tompkins County (the city and town of Ithaca,
and the towns of Enfield, Newfield, and Ulysses).
Winner was first elected to the State Senate in 2004.
