Winner'08 News

Elmira, N.Y., August 13--State Senator George Winner (R-C-I, Elmira) has been endorsed by the New York State Public Employees Federation (PEF) in his bid for re-election in New York’s 53rd Senate District.

PEF represents 58,000 professional, scientific, and technical employees across the state, including nurses, parole officers, road and bridge workers, and employees at local correctional facilities, youth centers, psychiatric centers and other health care facilities.

"We know that you appreciate and value the work performed by public employees in your district and around this state," wrote PEF President Kenneth Brynien in a letter to Winner. "You also understand the needs of working men and women and their families and support the programs and services that address these needs."

Winner’s 53rd Senate District encompasses all of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and Yates counties, and a portion of Tompkins County (the city and town of Ithaca, and the towns of Enfield, Newfield, and Ulysses).

Winner was first elected to the State Senate in 2004 and re-elected in 2006.

"I am extremely proud to have the confidence and support of this organization representing public employees throughout the Southern Tier-Finger Lakes region," said Winner. "I’m grateful for their recognition of my commitment to the future of our workers and the security of their families. Economic security for our workers is a fundamental responsibility, and we can only meet this responsibility through an economy that’s strong, steady, and creating good jobs that last. That’s my priority."

During his four years of service in the Senate, Winner has become recognized as a leading voice in support of state programs and policies to spark a revitalization of the upstate New York economy. He currently serves as chairman of the joint, bipartisan Legislative Commission on Rural Resources and has consistently emphasized strategies for rural, upstate economic development.
