Winner'08 News

Elmira, N.Y., October 23--New York’s leading small business association, the National Federation of Independent Business, has endorsed State Senator George Winner for re-election in the 53rd Senate district.

“As a State Senator, George Winner has been a steadfast ally and solid vote for small business,” said NFIB/New York State Director Mike Elmendorf. “During this session, Senator Winner had a 100 percent voting record on small business issues, earning him recognition as a ‘Guardian of Small Business,’ NFIB’s highest honor for a legislator. Senator Winner will continue to fight to cut taxes, rein in government spending, and improve our economic competitiveness. He will oppose job-killing mandates and stand up for entrepreneurs and free-enterprise. On issue after issue, Senator George Winner has proven that he is the right choice for small business.”

Winner said, “I’m grateful to have this recognition that I’ve always championed our small, independent businessmen and businesswomen as the foundation of our local economies. Now we’re going to have to focus like never before on keeping this commitment to the upstate economy, upstate jobs, and the economic security of upstate workers.”

“Senator Winner understands that the best way to create jobs and grow our economy is to reduce the cost of doing business, particularly for small employers who account for 99 percent of all businesses in New York and are responsible for most new job creation. George Winner is an experienced leader who gets results and who has consistently been on the right side of the issues for small business. We need him back in Albany to keep up that fight,” Elmendorf said.

With rising energy prices and healthcare costs, small business owners are looking for solutions to reduce the cost of doing business in New York. Small business owners and their employees vote in high numbers and are known for actively recruiting friends, family members and acquaintances to go to the polls.

NFIB’s political support is based on the candidate’s position and record on small-business issues. Winner’s endorsement comes from the NFIB/New York SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, the political action committee for NFIB/New York’s membership. The endorsement puts the considerable grassroots support of the state’s small businesses behind the Winner campaign.

Winner’s 53rd Senate District encompasses all of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and Yates counties, and a portion of Tompkins County (the city and town of Ithaca, and the towns of Enfield, Newfield, and Ulysses).

Winner was first elected to the State Senate in 2004 and re-elected in 2006.

During his four years of service in the Senate, Winner has become recognized as a leading voice in support of state programs and policies to spark a revitalization of the upstate New York economy. He currently serves as chairman of the joint, bipartisan Legislative Commission on Rural Resources and has consistently emphasized strategies for rural, upstate economic development.
