Winner'08 News

Elmira, N.Y., November 2--The Chemung County Deputy Sheriff’s Association has endorsed the re-election of State Senator George Winner (R-C-I, Elmira) in New York’s 53rd District.

In a letter informing Winner of the endorsement, the association’s president, Michael Decker, wrote that Winner’s "support of reforms for tougher laws that have enabled law enforcement and prosecutors to assist in battling the war on methamphetamine trafficking is only one example of his desire in protecting our vulnerable community. As Senator Winner has shown, with dedication and concern and in using his legislative knowledge and desire to improve our quality of life, our communities can be safer. It is Senator Winner’s openness and dedication that has earned our respect and endorsement."

The Chemung County Deputy Sheriff's Association is comprised of the county’s deputy sheriffs, E-911 communication operators, and clerical support staff. The association plays a key role in a variety of community initiatives and activities involving area youth, Neighborhood Watch groups, and the "Take a Bite Out of Crime" program.

"The security of our communities is an enormous responsibility, and I’ve long believed that state legislators have a duty to back up local law officers with the resources and the tough laws they need to do their jobs effectively and safely," said Winner, who has been a member of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections Committee since 2005. "Even in the face of the many challenges confronting New York State, the preservation of a strong commitment to law enforcement, tough laws, and public safety must remain a top priority."

Winner was first elected to the Senate in 2004 and re-elected two years later. He has sponsored and co-sponsored numerous pieces of criminal justice legislation including the state’s first comprehensive anti-meth strategy, several measures to strengthen the state’s sex offender registration law, an initiative to create New York's first Drug Dealer Registry, and legislation to protect children and the elderly from abuse.

The 53rd Senate District is comprised of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and Yates counties, and a portion of Tompkins County (the city and town of Ithaca, and the towns of Enfield, Newfield, and Ulysses).
