Elmira, N.Y., October 10--State Senator George Winner (R-C-I,
Elmira) has been endorsed by one of New York’s most influential law enforcement
unions in his bid for re-election in the 53rd Senate District.
The New York State Law Enforcement Officers Union, Council 82, represents
the state’s environmental conservation officers, forest rangers, park police
officers, and university police officers, along with many municipal police
deparments.
In a letter to Winner, Council 82 Executive Director James F. Lyman said,
“On behalf of the membership of Council 82, it is my pleasure to inform
you of our decision to endorse you in your upcoming Senate race. (Council
82) looks forward to working with you as we face the challenges that face
our great state.”
Winner was first elected to the Senate in 2004 and re-elected two years
later. He has sponsored and co-sponsored numerous pieces of criminal justice
legislation including the state’s first comprehensive anti-meth strategy,
several measures to strengthen the state’s sex offender registration law,
an initiative to create New Yorks' first Drug Dealer Registry, and legislation
to protect children and the elderly from abuse.
“Our law enforcement officers face challenges and dangers like they have
never faced before. As a state we need to ensure that our officers have
the resources and the tools they need to do their jobs effectively and safely,”
said Winner, who has been a member of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and
Corrections Committee since 2005. “New York government, in my opinion, has
several fundamental, overriding responsibilities, and one of them is to
back up our law enforcement officers. I’m grateful for the ongoing recognition
that my commitment to law enforcement has been steady and solid over the
course of my career in public service.”
The Council 82 endorsement represents the second major law enforcement organization
in recent days to back Winner’s re-election. Earlier this week The Police
Conference of New York and its 25,000 members announced its support for
Winner.
The 53rd Senate District is comprised of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and
Yates counties, and a portion of Tompkins County (the city and town of Ithaca,
and the towns of Enfield, Newfield, and Ulysses).
