Winner'08 News

Elmira, N.Y., September 23--State Senator George Winner (R-C-I, Elmira) has been endorsed by the New York State AFL-CIO in his bid for re-election to represent the state’s 53rd Senate District, the Friends for Winner campaign announced today.

The national AFL-CIO represents 13 million working women and men throughout the United States. The New York State AFL-CIO, the largest state labor federation in the nation, represents 2.5 million members.

"We feel that you have been a strong advocate for the needs of all working men and women," wrote state AFL-CIO President Denis M. Hughes in a letter to Winner. "The social and economic problems facing our state and nation require strong leadership on the part of our elected representatives."

Winner’s 53rd Senate District is comprised of Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, and Yates counties, and a part of Tompkins County (the city and town of Ithaca, and the towns of Enfield, Newfield, and Ulysses). He was elected to represent the district in 2004 and re-elected in 2006.

"I’m proud to have the confidence and support of working women and men. I’m grateful for this recognition of my commitment to the future of our workers and the security of their families," said Winner. "Greater economic security for our workers is a fundamental responsibility, and we can only honor it with an economy that’s strong, steady, and creating good jobs that last. That’s my priority."

The AFL-CIO endorsement represents the second major grassroots labor union backing Winner’s re-election. He recently received the support of the state Public Employees Federation (PEF) and its 58,000 members.

During the past four years that he’s represented this area in the Senate, Winner has been acknowledged as a leading voice in support of policies and strategies to spark a revitalization of the upstate New York economy. He currently serves as chairman of the joint, bipartisan Legislative Commission on Rural Resources and has consistently advanced strategies for rural, upstate economic development.
